E-mail: The area, located halfway between the mountains and the plains and transit point to reach the Friuli, was always a strategic site. Around the tenth century was built a fortress controlled by the bishop of Belluno, but of probable Roman origin. The same place-name appears to derive from the Latin cuniculus indicating the underground passages of the castle.
Conegliano "born" but in the twelfth century, when a group of noble families was organized by creating a government of type around the town of Bastia, with the consequent formation of a village. The castle remained the center of power, both civil (with seat Podesta's) and religious (with the collegiate church of San Leonardo). Castle remains only the bell tower, visible from the valley and surrounding hills, thanks to its central location on the top of Colle di Giano. The castle houses the Museo Civico, which are visible, among others, paintings by Palma The Young and Pordenone, and Roman remains found in coneglianese. Crafts and agriculture were encouraged by the foundation of numerous monasteries: Santa Maria Mater Domini (1231), the convent of the Fathers Humiliated San Polo (1316), St. Anthony, St. Francis of Friars Minor (1231), not to mention hospices and congregations of lay people. In the eighteenth century the castle, long since in ruins, was largely demolished to provide material to recover useful to new construction, including the Palazzo Comunale (1744). The old town of medieval origin, is concentrated mainly along Via XX Settembre (Contrada Granda), which runs at the foot of the hill on top of which stand villa Gera and Castle (now Museo Civico). However, other interesting places are located outside of this area.
Every year in June, in the heart of the historical center of Conegliano the event takes place in the Dama Castellana, a game of checkers with figures in Renaissance costume. This event is not a continuation of a secular Enlightening, but was introduced only a few years ago, but still managed to become a traditional event on the calendar coneglianese. In September, the most characteristic places of the city played all'enodama, checkers tournament in which the pawns are replaced by glasses of white wine and red. The goals are dell'enodama socialization and enhancement of productive enterprises of the territory.
